Imported Red grew from my first oil painting: a red cow leaping over a blood-red moon. An exaggeration of the Florida cracker cattle painted during last years blood moon. I carried that figure into a wider scene, setting a herd against a mountainside. The red carries several meanings at once: the red barn of an imagined farm, the phrase “when the cows come home,” and the idea of coming home to oneself, to God. It also points toward Florida’s layered origins, where even the cattle in the landscape arrived from elsewhere. The herd becomes part of a larger question: what does it mean to belong to a place, and what does it mean to come home? Isn’t it true that wherever you go, there you are?
